Tip of the Month: Exfoliation – The key to glowing skin

Exfoliation is the most effective way to achieve a soft, smooth, radiant complexion, by removing the dead skin, excess oil and daily grime that naturally builds up on our skin. There are lots of ways to exfoliate, and lots of reasons why you should.

Why exfoliate?

Dead skin cells have a rough texture that absorbs light; leading to uneven, dull skin. Dead skin cells act like a sponge too; even though they’re no longer part of the epidermis, they absorb your skincare products, which means your skin doesn’t get the full benefits of your routine. By removing them, your skin absorbs products more effectively, looks brighter and feels smoother.
It’s not just dead skin that builds up though; exfoliation also removes the pollution particles deposited on the skin throughout the day. These particles contain toxins that can speed up the ageing process, so it’s important to get rid of them regularly. And of course, exfoliation is also great for removing excess oil and grime, keeping our pores deeply cleansed and minimising their appearance.
Well-exfoliated skin ages more slowly, has fewer scars and blemishes, is better hydrated, and glows.

How to exfoliate?

There are many different ways to exfoliate your skin. The one most of us are familiar with is manual exfoliation, like scrubs and face brushes. Then there are chemical exfoliators, which are available as toners, masks, moisturisers and cleansers. These are made out of gentle acids like glycolic and salicylic acids, which eat away at the dead skin and grime.

What’s best for me?

With so much choice it can be hard to work out what’s best for your skin. Over-exfoliation at home can do more harm than good and leave the skin sensitive and dehydrated. This is why a Microdermabrasion Facial is the perfect way to reveal that glowing complexion; by using a fine jet of crystals as well as a gentle suction, your skin will be left expertly exfoliated and rejuvenated. Your therapist will work with you to tailor the treatment to your skin’s needs, and you can relax, knowing your skin is in capable hands.
